NUH Community Service!
On 21 Feb, we did a community service by visiting patients at NUH. I can personally say that it is a unique and memorable experience, as I and a few other members of ICy that participated had never done this kind of thing before. The story begins…
Pre-visit
We had planned on visiting two wards: one is the children ward and the other one is the dialysis ward (where people with faulty kidneys are treated). Because we and particularly Gary the IC for this project were very enthusiastic about the project, we even arranged a few fun sessions and songs to sing and dance along with the children. Tania and Daniel even prepared a song to play with harmonica!
The Visit
Unfortunately NUH requests volunteers not to disclose personal patient information, so this section remains dry.
However I can say that we can get along with the patients. Although they seemed to be reluctant at first, we could at least make them happy for a few hours. And we never performed our entertainment plans for the children! Well, at least we didn’t embarass ourselves by weird dancing
Post-visit
After we said goodbye to the patients, each of us filled out an evaluation form. Here is the result:
I bet the volunteers agree with the survey result! Before this, I wouldn’t believe that talking and playing with sick strangers can be so fulfilling.
For those who never did a service like this, please do. It will be a splendid experience.
PS: thanks to Gary for coordinating and supplying us with essential information!
